John Bailus STANDRIDGE, Sr.
1775 - 1854
of Cherokee Co. NC
- Macon, Haywood, Cherokee Cos., NC - Old Pendleton Dist., SC.
The STANDRIDGEs seem to have been traced by fellow researchers back to 1700 when a Thomas STANDRIDGE came to America at age 20 in 1720 from St. Olive, Southwick, Surry, ENGLAND. He was bound to Christopher VEALE for 4 years in Maryland.
Thomas' son, James STANDRIDGE moved to Rowan Co., NC by 1768. His wife was Eleanor.
James & Eleanor had a son also named James who was born abt 1755 back in MD. James was a Rev. War veteran out of Wilkes Co., NC.
He married Mary WALLIS in Rowan Co., NC and moved to Old Pendleton Dist., SC in that part which is now Oconee Co., SC. When James died, his Will was probated in Pickens Dist., SC. On Nov. 27, 1843, Mary the widow of James applied for and received a pension for James' service in the Revolutionary War.

In her pension application she stated, "she very well recollects the Revolutionary War and the trouble and distress experienced by those who lived in that day and that she and her husband did not escape their share of that trouble and distress", she gave the name of all her children in order of their births.

John Bailus, Jr. b. about 1775 in Rowan NC married abt 1796 to unknown in SC and moved to Cherokee Co., NC where all his children were born. He married 2nd abt 1829 to a Sarah {Mrs. CLIAN} [source: her grandson, Andrew Jackson Roberts' 1934 Polk Co., GA death certificate]
Eleanor b. in SC married Samuel Magby McBEE and died in 1839
Nancy b. in SC married John RYDER and died bef 1850
James b. in SC and married Susannah BARR. They moved to Lauderdale Co., AR where his children were born. He died in Pulaski Co., AR
Samuel b. 1785 SC married Rebecca Elizabeth PRICE and raised a family in Habersham Co., GA. He died there in 1873. Some of their children moved to AR. He

Joseph b. 4/2/1795 SC married Mary and lived SC. He died abt 1877.
Isaac b. 12/24/1798 SC married 1st Hetty and 2nd Charlotte. They stayed in SC.
Ailsey b. 12/8/1799 SC married Allen DOWNS.
John Bailus STANDRIDGE, Sr. moved into Macon Co., NC before 1820, along with William STANDRIDGE as evidenced by original Love survey maps which are in the front section of the Heritage Book for Macon Co., NC. . He was on the 1830 Macon Co., NC census and 1840 Cherokee Co., NC census. John & Sarah's homestead is located:
Going toward Murphy on Hwy 64; 1st signal on the right; 7 miles; Little Brasstown Creek Bapt Ch; right at Campbell School; go thru campus; blacksmith shops; 1/4 - 1/2 mile barn and sio and corn crib near creek. See foundations of 2 story house where John & Sarah lived and then later that John & Balis took over the farm. This is the old farm.
We assume for now that John Balius, Sr. died 1851-1855 in Gilmer Co., GA.
John STANDRIDGE [John B., Sr.] was in Macon Co., NC before 1820 as evidenced by original Love survey maps which are in the front section of the Heritage Book for Macon Co., NC. John, Wm. John & Wm. John Son ?, all lived side by side in Dist 15 [Tract #s 26 - 24 -22 in area that was South of the Cartoogencaye Creek and West of the Tennessee River but on Standridge Creek. Tract #2 was occupied by an Indian but cultivated by John Standage, which was north of their 3 tracts and the Cartoogegencaye Creek ran thru this tract #2. Others residing in this Dist 15 were Henry ADDINGTON, Jacob SILER, William ELDERS & Capt. John MOORE. Benj. STILES was over in Dist. 13.
John Bailus STANDRIDGE, Sr. had at least 6 sons:
Joseph 1798-Aft 1820 Haywood Co., NC, married and had 1 dtr by 1820 census.
Elijah 1799-1860+ m. Mary Jane "Polly" and died in Cherokee Co., NC or Polk Co., TN
Jesse 1800-1874 married Elizabeth BRADLEY 1823 Haywood Co., NC. He married 2nd Eliza ADDINGTON in 1829 and had 10 children. He died in Cherokee Co., NC and is buried in Shady Grove Cem., Murphy, Cherokee Co., NC.
William 1803-1837 married Elizabeth SWEATMAN.
John Bailus, Jr. 1805-1880+ married Elizabeth HAMPTON abt 1829 and had 7 children. He died in Cherokee Co., NC.
George Washington 1807-1865+ married Celia, had 6 children and died in AR.
