There were numerous other ROBERTS families living in 1850 Gilmer Co., GA, all in the same District.

While in Gilmer Co., GA, Elisha and Leathy had  5-6 more children [1 set of twins]:

Sarah Vanessa ROBERTS b. 1849  m. George Cleveland HARRIS Sr. 1866 Cherokee Co., NC; d. 1926 Tellico Plains, Monroe Co., TN.  They had 10 children.  They are buried at Tellico Plains Bapt Ch Cem., Monroe Co., TN

By 1856, Elisha and Leathy were back in Cherokee Co., NC.  This is evidenced by a 1856 deed in Cherokee Co., NC where Leathy received 180 acres from C.B. STILES paid for by John STANDRIDGE.  Elijah and his twin sister, Anna Miranda, are also grantees of this deed; but not husband Elisha or the other 8 children born before this deed was executed.

By 1860 census, Elisha & Leathy ROBERTS are in neighboring Polk Co., TN.  It was difficult to find them because the enumerator showed them as Roberts GRANT.  They were living in between the Alexander GRANT household and the Silas GRANT household in Dist. 8 in the Ducktown/Isabella area.  Their dtr, Mary M. ROBERTS, had married Silas GRANT bef 1860 and his father was Alexander GRANT.  Alexander GRANT had also been in 1850 Gilmer Co., GA living near the ROBERTS and the STANDRIDGEs. The 1860 census shows 3 more Elisha ROBERTS children born after this 1856 deed:

Elisha Roberts "from Polk Co., TN" enlisted 9/28/1862 in Blount Co., TN at age 52 as a Private into Co. C, Walker's 1st Battalion, Thomas' North Carolina Legion CSA.  According to the Soldiers' & Sailors System files, his rank in was a Private and his rank out was a Private.  His military records have been obtained from NARA.  He was transferred to Co. A, Walker's Batt. out of Cherokee Co., NC to join his 2 sons who had enlisted into Co. A.  Elisha was born in Clarke Co., GA and was residing in Polk Co., TN at the time he enlisted.  He had light hair, blue eyes & fair complexion.  He stood 5'7" tall.  He was in a hospital in Louden Co., TN in May & JUne 1863 "sick".  He died July 8, 1863 of disease.  Lethia claimed his body and it is believed that she carried him back to Ducktown Cem. for burial.

Leathy and the children continued living in Ducktown, Polk Co., TN and are found on the 1870 and 1880 censuses of Polk Co., TN.  She and Elisha had 1 child born aft 1860 census:

Lethia CLIAN-ROBERTS died 1900 in Hemptown, Fannin Co., GA.  She is buried at Ducktown Cem., Ducktown, Polk Co., TN per WPA survey but no tombstone remains visible.

My Mama's grandfather was Elijah L. ROBERTS b. 1854.  Elijah's middle name is said to be LOUCILL but no documentation has been found showing that name, only the initial of L which often looks like S in old handwriting. The source of LOUCILL was my great-aunt Mary Bowers-Roberts, but my cousin who wrote all this down could have heard wrong...it could have been STANCELL. He was called Lidge, a common nickname for Elijah,  and worked his whole life for the local copper mining company in Copperhill, Polk Co., TN. He was well known in the community and respected by all that knew him.

Elijah L. ROBERTS married  in 1877 in probably Ducktown or Isabella, Polk Co., TN,  Sarah Jane BROOKS, the dtr of Josiah/Josephus & Susanna "Susan" VAUGHN-BROOKS.  They had 7 children.  Sarah read a lot of medical books, probably those of her brother who was the doctor for the mining company.

Sarah Jane BROOKS-ROBERTS died in 1903 and is buried at Ducktown Cem., Polk Co., TN   In 1905 Polk Co., Elijah married Salah [Mrs. D.N.] 'Dazy' ROBERTS.  My family notes say she was nee BEAVER[S] and died in Hemptown, Fannin Co., GA.  Dazy re-married one month after Elijah's death to William Akins WILLIAMS a widower in Ducktown, Polk Co., TN.  William is buried at Zion Hill Cem., Turtletown, Polk Co., TN with his 1st wife, Lina Ellen 'Linnie' BARNETTE; and Dazy is buried next to Elijah in Ducktown Cem. along with his 1st wife, Sarah.

1918 Ducktown, TN: Wm. BOWERS, Medley & Arthur ROBERTSElijah and Sarah's son, Arthur Brooks ROBERTS, who married Medley Leona BOWERS in 1910 Polk Co, TN.  Medley was the dtr of Elias Berry BOWERS and Rutha American AKINS-BOWERS who are buried at Harmony Bapt Ch Cem. in Blue Ridge, Fannin Co., GA.  Arthur and Medley had only one child to live beyond infancy. They divorced in 1920.  It was a bitter divorce, so my mother never knew her father or even saw him until she was about 33 yrs old.  Medley married 2 more times but had no more children.  She died from cancer in 1952 and is buried at Oaklawn Cem. in Jacksonville, FL under her married name of CRAWFORD [Mrs. Oscar H. Crawford, Sr.]  Arthur Brooks ROBERTS, in 1916 leased 160 area of land in Aspen, Pitkin Co., CO for mining.  In 1917 he was a miner for Lucky Gold Mine Co. in Douthat, OK according to his WWI Registration Card.   In the 1920's he leased an additional 12 acres in Pitkin Co., CO and while there was a Mason.  By 1930, he was working as a miner in Butte, Silver Bow Co., MT where he was briefly married in 1925 and again divorced after 1930.  Lastly, he re-married to Ann PRICE and had 3 sons and 2 dtrs.   He served as a Vet to the horses in the US Army, stationed in Germany during WWII.  Arthur died in 1967 in Knoxville, TN and is buried at the National Cemetery in Knoxville.

Elijah & Sarah's oldest son, John Henry ROBERTS,  suffered from a head injury he received when a car door was slammed on his head.  He was born abt 1878 and died aft 1920 in Eastern State Hospital in Knoxville, TN.

Elijah's second oldest son, Oscar Augustus ROBERTS, married Medley BOWERS' sister, Mary Louisa BOWERS in 1910.  Oscar d. 1950 and Mary ROBERTS d. 1989 are buried in East View Cem. in Atlanta, GA.  They had 2 dtrs, shown in the photo below:  Lucille and Eileen, both deceased.  Mary died shortly after her 100th birthday.

Elijah & Sarah's dtr, Lillie L. ROBERTS, married Samuel B. PENCE.  She died in 1974 Ringgold, Catoosa Co., GA.  They had 2 dtrs, Eula Mae [Mrs. Lester J. FORD] & Ada [Mrs. Fred C. CARPENTER].  They were all living in Detroit, MI in 1930 next door to one another.   Two of Lillie's great-aunts or uncles also married into the Absolom PENCE Family in Gilmer Co., GA.

Elijah & Sarah Jane's dtr, Minnie Ella ROBERTS, married both Dean SISSON in 1902 then his brother, Thomas Benton SISSON in 1904 in Polk Co., TN.  They were both sons of Thomas E. SISSON b. 1857 & grandsons of John Erwin SISSON.  Ella died in 1972 in Knoxville, TN.  Ella & Thomas had 9 children.

Elijah & Sarah Jane's dtr, Florence E. ROBERTS, married 1908 to Robert D. "Bob" GOODE.  He was a s/o Lewis GOODE b. 1859 TN. They had 5 children and lived all their lives in Polk Co., TN  They are both buried at Zion Hill Cem., Turtletown, Polk Co., TN

Elijah & Sarah Jane's youngest dtr, Ethel S. ROBERTS married M.P. SMITH in 1911 Polk Co., TN, divorced him and re-married to Goodman Ross LEDFORD in 1920 Polk Co., TN. He was the s/o Columbus M. LEDFORD and Martha HALL. Ethel died from childbirth in 1922 in Dalton, Whitfield Co., GA and is buried at Old Hamilton Presbyterian Cem., Corner Stone & Happy Streets in Dalton.

So far, it is most likely that Elisha's father was Noel Francis ROBERTS and mother was Heighly CARTER who married in 1808 Clarke Co., GA  Noel Francis died in 1843 Austin, Fort Bend Co., TX and was a s/o John & Judah ROBERTS of early Columbia Co., GA.  If anyone has any information about these ROBERTS, I'd love to hear from you...
