Caleb GRIFFETH, Sr.

Worcester, MA --> Pickens Co., GA

Caleb Griffeth was born Dec 30, 1769 in Worcester, MA, a son of Daniel GRIFFETH and his 2nd wife, Mary ALDRICH.  By 1798 he had moved to Franklin Co., GA where he married Julia Ann 'Julon' LITTLE, dtr/o James Hamilton LITTLE and Isabella HAMILTON.  Caleb's brother, Asa GRIFFETH married Julia's sister, Nancy LITTLE in 1818 Franklin Co., GA but returned to Laurens, Otsego Co., NY where their father, Daniel, had died in 1814.  Asa  ultimately died abt 1845  in Sherman, St. Joseph Co., MI and Nancy returned to Union Co., GA where she died sometime after 1850.  . 

Caleb & Julia had 9 known children:

Caleb was a wealthy farmer and slave owner on lands between Long Swamp Church & Jasper in Pickens Co., GA that was known as the Caleb Griffith Settlement in Early Pickens Co.  The Griffeth family was involved from the beginning in the marble business because Caleb's daughter, Mary, had married Col. Samuel TATE, the historical founding family of said business.  Caleb died on April 10, 1857.  He is buried in the historical TATE-GRIFFETH Family Cemetery, Tate, Pickens Co., GA

More about his children:

Sarah GRIFFETH m. Paul M. FURR 1815.  They had 11 children and resided mostly in Hall Co., GA.  They are buried at Bryant-Furr Family Cem., Hall Co., GA

Stephen GRIFFETH never married.  He had on-going relationships with both Phoebe CHITWOOD in Franklin Co, GA and Mary JONES of Pickens Co., GA and had 7 children between them.  His son, Caleb JONES 1849-1885 is the only one of his children to be buried at the TATE-GRIFFETH Family Cemetery.  His son, Caleb CHITWOOD, was grandfather to famous ball player, Ty COBB.

Thomas Jefferson GRIFFETH m. Rebecca CRUMLEY in 1832 Hall Co., GA and died after 1850 in Clarke Co., GA

Mary Aldrich GRIFFETH m. Samuel TATE and had 7 children.  Samuel was a wealthy farmer and his son, Stephen, the founder of the marble business that is still in operation today.  They are buried at the Old Tate-Griffeth Cem., Pickens Co., GA  The old Tate House is now rented out for weddings and luncheons.

Caleb GRIFFETH, Jr. m. Mary VAUGHN dtr/o John VAUGHN and Mary Jane McCRACKEN of Bartow Co., GA.  They had 9 children.  They are buried at Tate-Griffeth Cem., Tate, Pickens Co., GA

Cynthia GRIFFETH m. Enoch SWAIM 1/25/1824 in Hall Co., GA.  They had 10 children and are buried in Union Co., GA where they lived most of their married lives.

Benjamin Franklin GRIFFETH m. Sarah McINTYRE 12/16/1828 Habersham Co., GA.  He died in Madison Co., AL

Lucinda GRIFFETH m. George BOWERS and died aft 1860 in either Union or Hall Cos., CA.  See my write-up about her.

Matthew GRIFFETH m. Elizabeth SMITH and died in Morgan Co., AL.  They had 11 children.
