Ancestors & Descendants of
Lethia CLIAN/CLINE - ROBERTS

1820 - 1900
of TN, Cherokee Co. NC - Gilmer Co., GA - Polk Co., TN

Last Update:  November 14, 2009

Lethia CLIAN was called "Leathy" and was never called Alethia on any documentation or census records.  She was born 1818-1821  NC/SC/TN and possibly a dtr of Mrs. Sarah CLIAN who re-married to John Bailus STANDRIDGE, Sr., in Cherokee Co., NC before 1840.  We have substantiated Lethia's maiden name as CLIAN from her son, Andrew Jackson Roberts', 1934 death certificate in Polk Co., GA.  The most common spelling of this surname is CLINE.

Leathy married Elisha ROBERTS abt Nov 1840 in probably Cherokee Co., NC but no marriage records have survived for this time-frame to be sure. Elisha ROBERTS was born abt 1810 Clarke Co., GA per his CSA military records.

In 1850 Gilmer Co., GA Leathy & Elisha and their oldest children were living with John & Sarah STANDRIDGE,  and a Rebecca GOIN or GORE or GOONEY and her 3 children.  They had arrived in Gilmer Co. the year before

In 1856, Lethia ROBERTS and her 2 children, Elijah L. and Anna Miranda ROBERTS both b. abt 1854 and twins, received 188 acres of land in Cherokee Co., NC from the STILES family.  This land was paid for by John STANDRIDGE, according to the deed...it did not stipulate John Sr. or John Jr.  This deed also stated that Lethia was living in Cherokee Co. at the time the deed was executed.  Why Elisha and the other children born before this deed was executed were omitted from this deed has yet to be understood. Further research of the Cherokee Co., NC court and deed records will be done shortly.

In 1860 Elisha & Leathy ROBERTS were living in Ducktown/Isabella area of Polk Co., TN in between 2 GRANT households as their dtr, Mary M. had married Silas GRANT s/o Alexander GRANT.  Elisha ROBERTS died from disease at Frank Ramsey Hospital in Loudon, TN on July 8, 1863 while serving the Confederacy during the Civil War in Co. C, Walker's Battln, Thomas Legion NC.  Military records state that Lethia claimed the body.  Leathy and her children remained in Polk Co., TN through the 1880 census.  Their son, Elijah L. ROBERTS married Sarah Jane BROOKS and lived his whole life in Ducktown, the only descendant to stay in the area and by The Depression and his death in 1933, most of his children removed to Knoxville, TN.

Leathy filed a claim in Polk Co., TN for property damages with the Southern Claims Commission and it was approved.  NARA tells me that they cannot find her records.

Lethia CLINE-ROBERTS died in 1900 Hemptown, Fannin Co., GA and is buried at Ducktown Cemetery, Ducktown, Polk Co., TN per WPA Survey but her tombstone is now missing, perhaps buried.  It is suspected that Elisha is buried there as well.
