John W. AKINS was born in 1832, the son of Ezekiel AKINS and Melinda Jane "Jane" CANTRELL of Pickens Co., GA and grandson of John AKINS, Sr. of Union Co., GA. The AKINS have been researched back to the early 1600's in Henrico Co., VA.

John W. and Nancy J. DANIEL were married in Union Co., GA in 1852. Nancy J. was a dtr of Josiah Lafayette DANIEL, Sr. and Delithcia Eliza "Dicey" WOOD. At the beginning of the Civil War, they travelled by covered wagon to be with relatives of the SELF & DANIEL families and avoid the War. This information alone has been very significant in determining the family connections and the place of residency for their grandparents, aunts, uncles & cousins between 1820 and 1875.

1. Sarah Jane - b. 1854 m. 1874 William James 'Will' HUCKABEE Morgan Co., AL. They had 8 children.
2. William Newton - 1855-1935 in Northern Alabama. He m. Sarah Ann Elizabeth MARTIN in 1879 in Lawrence Co., AL. and had 6 children. He m. Georgia Ann SEABOLT in 1932 Hall Co., GA and m. to Indiana J. JONES in 1935.
3. Joseph E. Brown AKENS 1858-1910 married 5 times. He is buried at Lebanon Meth. Church a/k/a King Cem., Gillsville, Hall Co., GA

Nancy FINN-CANNON 1873 in Union Co., GA. She died giving birth to only child, William S. AKINS in 1878.

Susan R. MARTIN 1855-1890 were m. 1879 in Winston Co., AL and had 3 children, John M.1881, Nannie 1884 and Lenia C. in 1886

Olley STAYLER m. 11/27/1890 in Gainesville, Hall Co., GA.

Mattie DAVIS m. 3/26/1891 in Gainesville, Hall Co., GA. She died giving birth 8/1892 to Lela C. AKINS

Frances McENTYRE m. 8/22/1892 in Gainesville, Hall Co., GA and had 3 children, Maude, Guy and Estelle in the 1890's.

4. Dicie Caroline - 1862-1935 m. Walter B. DUNNIGAN 12/16/1897 in Gainesville, Hall Co., GA. Their only child was adopted: Pauline Gailland-Akins b. 1902

5. Rutha America - 1864-1910 m. Elias Berry BOWERS in 1879 Union Co., GA. They had 10 children. He was a wealthy farmer and later bought and ran The Central Hotel in Blue Ridge. She died in Atlanta from complications from gall bladder surgery and is buried in Blue Ridge, Fannin Co., GA at Harmony Bapt Ch Cem.

6. Eliza Menervia - 1886-1937 m. Virgil Alexander "Axton" ENGLAND and had 11 children. She is buried at Calvary Bapt. Ch. Cem., Hall Co., GA

7. Mary Louisa - 1868-1951 m. Thomas John ENGLAND 1886 Union Co., GA and had 3 children. She married James A. Polk ENGLAND in 1895 and gave birth to 8 more children in Union Co., GA. She died in Pauls Valley, Garvin Co., OK. Her 2 husbands were 1st cousins.

8. John Silas AKENS - 1870-1956 married Sarah Elizabeth HORN in 1895 Patrick, McLennan Co., TX. They had 9 children. He died in Abilene, Taylor Co., TX and is buried at Midway Cem., Hawley, Jones Co., TX

9. Alice Cordelia - 1872-1914 m. Joseph Green ALLEN in 1896 Gainesville, Hall Co., GA. They had 9 children. She died in either Rochelle, Wilcox Co., GA or Upson Co., GA

10. Ellen Rebecca - 1875-1940 m. John L. HAMILTON 1896 in White Co., GA. They had 5 children. She is buried at Mossy Creek Meth Ch Cem., White Co., GA

11. Martha Winford 1877-1960 m. Joseph Thomas LAWRENCE 1894 Banks Co., GA. They had 6 children. She is buried at Liberty Meth. Ch. Cem., Davis Co., NC.

12. David Walter 1880-1909 m. Essie Inez STEPHENS 1900 Hall Co., GA. They had 4 children. They lived in Scotsboro, Jackson Co., AL

Nancy died in 1905 and John W. married Martha Evaliane 'Eva' FRICKS, former wife of Joseph MEDLIN of Banks Co., GA and former lover of Caleb CHITWOOD, illegitimate s/o Stephen GRIFFETH 1801-1873 of Pickens Co., GA and Phoebe CHITWOOD of Franklin Co., GA. Eva was b. 11/18/1848 and died in Alto, Banks Co., GA in 1930. Her parents were Christian FRICKS and Cynthia HARRIS. She had 3 children by Caleb: Ellis Joeberry FRICKS, Olivia FRICKS, William Riley FRICKS. Caleb CHITWOOD was grandfather to famous baseball player, Ty COBB.

John was brutally murdered while walking home. No death date was placed on his tombstone, so we are uncertain exactly when he died but probably between 1911-1918. John W. and Nancy are buried in the Lebanon Meth. Ch. Cem. a/k/a King Cem. in Hall Co., GA. Eva is buried in Harmony Cem. in Banks Co., GA.
